July 2021 Charity Run
The Plano Pacers Charity run benefiting Joey’s Wings will be held on July 31st at Bob Woodruff Park. The 5K will start at 8:00, the Kids K will start at about 9:00, after the 5K. Course layouts can be found here. This is our annual charity event and members and non-members are encouraged to donate to this worthwhile cause.
Joey's Wings is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2014 to honor Joey, a boy who loved running and music but was tragically taken away from his family and friends at the tender age of 10 by pediatric kidney cancer. Their mission is to fund research that focuses on kidney cancers affecting children and young adults, raise awareness and provide support to families affected by childhood cancer. The Board of Directors and other team members operate solely on a volunteer basis. They work tirelessly towards this mission and have, among other things, brought federal legislative changes and donated over $200,000 to University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) kidney cancer research program led by Dr. Jim Brugarolas. The $150,000 in seed money raised by Joey’s Wings enabled this program to secure a $1.1MM grant from the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Researchers with the Kidney Cancer Program are using the funding to dissect the biology of tRCC and identify treatment therapies. More information about Joey’s Wings can be found at joeywings.org.
Joey's Wings is looking for matching donor for 7 year old Lillian in Houston who is fighting a relapse of leukemia. A table will be set up on the race day for bone marrow drive hosted by Be The Match. Details about this drive can be found at：donor4lillian.mozello.com
We will continue to support the streamlined processes that have become our new normal including no in-person registration or membership sign-ups on race day. Please click here to process your membership transactions up to 6:00pm the night before the race. Guests/Members who want to donate to the charity and get an event shirt can sign up here up to 6:00pm the night before the race. To be gauranteed a T-shirt please sign up by July 14th.
Prior to 7:30 on race day, members can pick up shirts/chips and guests can pick up shirts/bibs at the race. Active members who do not want a shirt (or to donate) do not need to pre-register, just bring your chip or show up early to pick up a chip if you are a new member.
