The Snowdrop Ultra 55hr Race is a fundraising event to raise money for pediatric cancer research and scholarships for survivors, and this will be my fourth time running. I'm running this year in memory of Reagan Elizabeth Flemming, a young woman I never met. Her parents were the fraternity brother and sister of my cousins. In July of 2008, at eleven yrs. old, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma of her leg. She endured surgeries, radiation, chemo, medical trials...you name, she did it all at UVA and NIH. She was a strong advocate for fundraising for childhood cancer, as her parents John and Mary still are. She was overcome by her cancer at eighteen years old, in March of 2015, a year after speaking at a school's Relay for Life celebration, where she had even “walked” the track on her crutches with the student body! She is survived by her parents, one older sibling, and 4 younger siblings. Sadly she passed two months before high school graduation, but the school held her place in the line up and her best friend walked in her memory to get her diploma.
I deeply appreciate any pledges that you make in her memory, and hope that with our help eventually cures will be found for all forms of childhood cancer so that no other parents must endure the loss of a child to cancer.
