The inaugural ME STRONG 5k was started by the friends of Linda Ryan, who, at 43, was diagnosed, for the third time with cancer. While Linda was battling cancer her friends were organizing a 5k in her honor. They chose a 5k because Linda was at the height of her fitness level, and had just run her first marathon at the time of her diagnosis. The goal was to encourage community members to exercise and commit to healthy lifestyles, as Linda believed her fitness level was playing a significant level in her battle. The first 2012 ME STRONG Linda’s Run for the Dream was an overwhelming success with hundreds of participants and thousands of dollars raised.
Just two months after the first ME STRONG event, Linda and friends were relieved to hear the news she no longer had evidence of cancer. It was the words “no evidence of disease” along with the overwhelming success of the first ME STRONG race that fueled the fire to make ME STRONG a 501c3 charitable organization that would support individuals in their battle against cancer and promote community members to commit to healthy living.
