Joey's Wings Foundation
Joey's Wings is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2014 to honor Joey, a boy who loved running and music but was tragically taken away from his family and friends at the tender age of 10 by pediatric kidney cancer. Their mission is to fund research that focuses on kidney cancers affecting children and young adults, raise awareness and provide support to families affected by childhood cancer. The Board of Directors and other team members operate solely on a volunteer basis. They work tirelessly towards this mission and have, among other things, brought federal legislative changes and donated over $300,000 to University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW) kidney cancer research program led by Dr. Jim Brugarolas. The $150,000 in seed money raised by Joey’s Wings enabled this program to secure a $1.1MM grant from the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas (CPRIT). Researchers with the Kidney Cancer Program are using the funding to dissect the biology of tRCC and identify treatment therapies. This year the money we raise through the run will benefit pediatric kidney cancer patients for financial assistance with medical bills, travel expenses, food, toys, and other miscellaneous items.
