Just 2 days shy of her senior prom, 2 weeks before high school graduation and only 18 years old, Meghan was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. 

After six rounds of chemotherapy, several lumbar punctures, infections, heart palpitations, more than one trip to the ICU, organ failure, coma, dialysis, respirator, feeding tube and brain injury... Meghan went home after 13 months in the hospital. 

Last week her feeding tube was finally removed. She attends physical and occupational therapy 5 days a week. She has had to re-learn how to stand, walk, chew, eat, read, write, dress and live again.

Life is still far from normal for Meghan, but I am proud of how hard she works. She has had a good attitude throughout this entire process. 

When people hear I'm doing another ultramarathon, they usually ask why. Sometimes with a look of admiration but more often with a look of shock or disbelief or pity. Why would anyone put their body through such a grueling event?

My answer is Meghan. She was not given a choice. She couldn't opt out. She couldn't walk off the course. So, I made a promise to her that I would run in her honor until no more kids have to suffer through cancer.
