April of 2019 marks my 3rd year as an ovarian cancer survivor.  Although my ovarian cancer recurred as metastatic cancer in my lungs in January of 2018, I am continuing to fight.  Recently I started on an immunotherapy trial, and I am hopeful that this treatment plan will offer me a prolonged outlook.

Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of gynecologic cancer death in U.S. women, and this is largely in part to late stage diagnosis and the high rate of recurrence of the disease.  Ovarian cancer has so many nonspecific symptoms, many of which are similar to monthly menstrual symptoms or other benign conditions.  I myself had symptoms of bloating, pelvic discomfort, and quickly feeling full when eating... but I didn't KNOW these were ovarian cancer symptoms at the time, so I didn't really pay attention to them as much as I should have.  It wasn't until a friend encouraged me to see a doctor for persistent acid reflux that I actually did go to visit a doctor who put all the signs and symptoms together.  You can read more about ovarian cancer symptoms & signs here.

The Sprint for Life 5K Run/Walk began in 1998, and raises funds for the Blanton-Davis Ovarian Cancer Research Program at MD Anderson.  On Race Day, we will all come together to raise funds for research and increase awareness about ovarian cancer and its symptoms.  I created a team, “Mel’s Marchers”, for this year’s Sprint for Life, because I wanted to take a more active role in this great event.  I would love for you to sign up to run or walk with us on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 7:30am.  Enrollment fees range from $25-$28 depending on if you would like to compete.  If you can’t join me on race day, I hope that you will consider donating in my team’s name to support this cause.
