Snowdrop Foundation

Every year, we have participated in the Snowdrop Ultra 55 Race and Relay as volunteers.  After our last shift I always walk away thinking, "I should do that..."  Well, this is the year.  I am really PARTICIPATING.  Over a 55-hour period from December 30, 2019 to January 1, 2020, I am going to try to walk 100 miles.  Training starts now!  Why in the world would I do that?

Our oldest son, Bucky was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago on May 20, 2009.  He was an otherwise healthy high school junior who then had to endure 8 months of treatments ... tests, scans, chemotherapy, surgeries.  In all, we spent almost 100 nights in the hospital.  He was finally released to return to school in mid-January 2010.  My registration, training and race in the Ultra 55 lines up with the 10th anniversary of his diagnosis, treatment and return to school.  I can think of no better way to honor the struggle of cancer patients like Bucky, and to celebrate his 10 years of remission than by fully participating in the Snowdrop Ultra 55 this year.

The Snowdrop Foundation does great work.  They support families of pediatric cancer patients in so many ways and even provide college scholarships to qualifying survivors.  Money that they raise also funds research to find better treatments and searches for a cure for these horrible cancers.  Trish and Kevin Kline are two of the best people that I know and the work they do through this foundation is done with care, practicality and love.  I am happy to be able to raise some money for the Snowdrop Foundation this year by wearing out some shoes.

I will admit that I am participating this year for myself, too.  It's time to focus more on fitness and this will motivate me.  And, well, it's the Ultra 55 and I am 55 this year!

And as always Phil is supporting me as my head trainer and coach.  He will make me stick to my training schedule and make sure I eat right (at home :) ) and keep me focused on our goal.  He will be walking with me through most of my training but is also finally rehabbing his shoulder and trying to avoid surgery this summer.  Seems that the years of pitching batting practice to baseball teams for three boys has taken its toll.
