Thanks to colorectal cancer screening and advances in treatment, the death rate from colorectal cancer has declined. In fact, screening is also allowing more colorectal cancers to be found earlier when the disease is easier to cure. There are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States. Colorectal cancer screening can help save lives!

In order to help promote colorectal cancer screening, MD Anderson Cancer Center is hosting its 9th Annual SCOPE (Sprint for Colorectal Oncology Prevention and Education) 5K Fun Run/Walk.

SCOPE invites you to partner with us to build awareness, promote education and celebrate survivorship, Saturday, March 22, 2014.

Fundraising for SCOPE
In 2006 I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.  My wife and I decided that the best thing for me would be to have my surgery at MD Anderson in Houston and to have my chemotherapy treatments at home in Topeka.  In 2007 I learned I had metastatic disease in my lungs.  It was at that time I met Dr. Eng.  She not only became my oncologist, but an invaluable part of my care team and a source of strength.  I am so thankful for her.  I was saddened to learn that her mother had developed colorectal cancer, the same disease she and I fought so hard to battle in my own body.  I have joined the SCOPE 5k team to honor the memory of her mother, Wendy, and to help raise funds to promote colorectal cancer awareness.  Thanks for helping me reach my goal so that someday others won't have to hear the words "you have colorectal cancer".
