Thanks to colorectal cancer screening and advances in treatment, the death rate from colorectal cancer has declined. In fact, screening is also allowing more colorectal cancers to be found earlier when the disease is easier to cure. There are now more than 1 million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States. Colorectal cancer screening can help save lives! In order to help promote colorectal cancer screening, MD Anderson Cancer Center is hosting its 9th Annual SCOPE (Sprint for Colorectal Oncology Prevention and Education) 5K Fun Run/Walk. SCOPE invites you to partner with us to build awareness, promote education and celebrate survivorship, Saturday, March 22, 2014. |

Erinn's Team WRECKtum was formed in the spring of 2012 by my daughter, Erin Scott, a patient of Dr. Eng's. Erin had been diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer the previous spring and had been undergoing chemotherapy. In spite of her trials and struggles, she still took on the challenge to form a team to participate in the SCOPE-5K, recruiting nearly 100 family, friends and co-workers for the team; gathering sponsors to give free t-shirts to all participants; and raised over $10,000 for SCOPE!
Just a week before that year's SCOPE-5K we learned the cancer had spread too far to be treated further, and the day of the run was Erin's last day at MD Anderson before coming home for hospice care. Her many friends turned out en mass to ensure that she didn't miss the run and you can see pics on the website of Erin, in her wheel chair, with IV tower in-tow, beaming her ever-present smile, surrounded by family and friends and enjoying the event.
Following Erin's passing in June, 2012, the Erin M. Scott Memorial Endowment was created at MD Anderson and donations through Team WRECKtum and directly provide a permanent gift to the SCOPE efforts. The endowment also funds the annualCourageous Spirit Award, MD Anderson's only award given to a patient, to recognize a colorectal cancer patient who demonstrates inspirational courage and strength in their fight to beat cancer.
