Beautiful Saturday for sprinting in Indian Harbour Beach...plus a SCR Random Runner has been selected....Congratulations to Lyan P.! He was the first SCR Random Runner selected this ROY Series season. He's the lucky winner of a $150 gift card to Running Zone for FREE SHOES! This photo was taken at the Sprint for Sight 5K. Lyan is sporting the SCR Run With Us Black tech shirt.???
Thank you to Running Zone who is the presenting sponsor of this season's SCR Random Runner. Up next, D.A.S.H. in Life 5K in Merritt Island on November 9, 2024. Be there!
The 42nd Space Coast Runners Runner of the Year Series (ROY) is kicking off this Saturday with some exciting updates, including a new race and running south at the Space Coast Half. Plus, we’ve got ourselves a brand new ROY series points calculator! The 2024 - 2025 series is presented by Gratium Wealth Planning.
This year, the Brianna Marie Foundation 5K is joining the series lineup. The established 5K runs in Melbourne and will be the 7th race of the 10 race series. Another notable change is for the Space Coast Half Marathon. Since 2017 SCR members have scored ROY points for running the North side half. With construction happening at the Lee Wenner Park Boat Ramp, Running Zone has had to consolidate the north course for use by Marathon runners only. This means all Half Marathon participants will be running South! You’ll score points and earn Ran All Races Challenge credit for either completing the full marathon or the half marathon.
We’re excited to begin utilizing a new automated ROY Series points calculator courtesy of SCR member, Abre Chase. Abre is a programmer who volunteered to take on the task of further automating how ROY points are calculated and how they will be displayed. He worked with Steve Hebert who has volunteered his computing skills the past 3 years and the automation is looking fantastic. It will be exciting to test out at this season’s first race, Saturday’s Sprint for Sight 5K!
As for the series rules, there are no major updates—it will be another 2 "drop" rule this year. This means a runners’ two worst performances do not count toward their final points total if they run all 10 races. Or you can utilize the 2 drops as races to skip if they don’t fit into your schedule. It's still in your best interest to participate in as many series races as possible to maximize your points!
Remember, your SCR membership must be active to score ROY points. Don’t let it lapse. The age you are this Saturday at Sprint for Sight 5K is the age you will be for all scoring purposes for Runner of the Year Series that spans from October 2024 to May 2025. Example: On 10/5/24 I am 49 years old. This means I will be scored in the 45-49 age group for the entire 2024 - 2025 Series even if I turn 50 in January 2025.

VIERA, FL, April 21, 2024: – With hundreds of people on hand to witness the record-breaking attempt, Kaitlin Donner, 34, did not disappoint. Despite facing higher than average temperatures, Donner pushed her son, Mikey (18 months) around the Viera High School track on Friday night to shatter the Guinness World Record for fastest mile pushing a stroller.
Kaitlin and Mikey broke the record for running that one mile by clocking a time of 5 minutes, 11 seconds.
The event, hosted by Space Coast Runners, was a testament to Donner’s exceptional athleticism and determination. The former professional Team USA triathlete, mom and local business owner celebrated her record setting performance with a huge smile and hugs from her husband, Ed and sons Chris and Mikey.
“It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be going after the mile”, said Kaitlin. I didn’t expect so many people to show up to watch and cheer. I think that speaks volumes about our amazing running community here in Brevard County.” She went on to add, “I also didn’t realize how much it (the record attempt) would resonate with women. I hope it inspires parents, moms and the athletic community.”
Space Coast Runners organized the remarkable event on Friday night, April 19th, at the Viera High School’s Acosta-Streufert track, where history was made by 13 seconds. The Donner duo’s accomplishment will undoubtedly be remembered for a show in athletic excellence but also in a true showing of community support.
The previous record was 5 minutes, 24 seconds. Record pending ratification.
Congratulations to our Space Coast Runners Team at the Brevard Corporate 5K. Not only did they win the Fastest Club title but the team placed 2nd for Overall Fastest Company. Incredible! View results here: https://bit.ly/3JsD74k

The run was dedicated in memory of SCR member, Rick Foresteire and was a grand celebration. Participants had the option of running on the beach or sidewalk. Weather was perfectly hot for an August evening and everyone had a great time.
Merritt Island was declared the winner for 2022. Wearing white, 41 participants came out to represent their little island. This makes 3 Battle of Brevard titles for MI, having won in 2017, 2018 and now 2022.
Thank you to our run leader, Terry Ryan who coordinated the Battle and to all the volunteers who helped make it a success. There were a total of 191 participants representing 15 of Brevard County’s city/towns.
MAX BREWER BRIDGE RUN IN TITUSVILLE | We've changed up this Saturday's run! The Moccasin Trail run was originally scheduled for this Saturday but it has been CANCELLED. Instead our next stop on the Hot & Humid Summer Run Schedule is in Titusville. Join SCR for a Saturday morning bridge run on the beautiful A. Max Brewer Bridge at 7AM.
The incline of the bridge makes this a moderately challenging run or walk. The distance is minimal — it's about 1.3 miles over the bridge and back again. If you want to add some distance to your walk or run, start at the west end of Sand Point Park and do the park loop before crossing the bridge. Your run leader will be Paul. We'll meet at the pavilion by the restrooms on the the side of the bridge. Restrooms are open.
Address: A. Max Brewer Memorial Pkwy, Titusville, FL 32796
Time: 7:00 AM
Admit it. You've asked yourself the same question. The new question should be "does this pair help me run fast"? We're talking about the pants - not jeggings - that you're going to wear to THIS Friday evening's Blue Jean Mile kicking off at the Satellite High School track at 6pm.
This fun, FREE and definitely quirky race is part of the Hot & Humid Summer run schedule sponsored by SCR (Space Coast Runners) and open to everbody - member or not. "It's part of our effort to keep people active during the summer," said Brittany Streufert, Operations Director for SCR. "The schedule offers a variety of terrains and places and attendance will help give us an idea of what people like."
Almost unbelievably, there is actual history to this event. It came about in 2017 when Citius Magazine writer, Paul Snyder, penned a quip wondering how fast someone could run a mile wearing jeans. Of course, there are always people will to try and soon Citius was offering $1,000 for the person who could break four minutes.
So far, their coffers have remained safe as the current world record for the BJM is 4:06:25 set by Asics team runner Johnny Gregorek in May, 2020. Gregorek used the event to draw attention to and raise money for NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in memory of his brother who had died the year before. He raised $36,000 and Asics began sponsoring a yearly virtual BJM to support NAMI.
How will you fare Friday? We are pretty sure that no one reading this can break four-minutes - with or without jeans - but how 'bout six or nine or 13 minutes? So whip out your full length denim - five holes max, you sneaky devils - grab your sense of humor and come join the fun!
Runners will go off in heats based on their own paces. And smile - Brittany and Coach Kaitlin Donner will be posting live on the SCR Facebook page!
Race Registration here! You can register to run at the event. Registration opens at 5:30pm. Hot and Humid Summer Race Schedule Here (Isn't that an awesome logo?)
Due to pending bad weather tomorrow in our area, we're canceling the Saturday Cocoa Beach Run that was scheduled for 6am. Next beach run will be in July. Check the Hot & Humid Summer Run Schedule for all the SCR running opportunities.
Come join Space Coast Runners and hang out at our first Summer Social since 2019. It's been awhile but we're getting back on track. The club social will be held at the excellent Intracoastal Brewing Co in the Eau Gallie district in Melbourne.
The Summer Social is THIS Sunday from 1pm to 3pm. The first drink is on us...and it doesn't have to be a cold beer! We'll have drink tickets for beer, wine, lemonade and bottle water. Plus, the first 90 attendees will score a "Classic" pint glass courtesy of the Space Coast Classic 15K & 2 Mile. All you have to do one is wear one of our "Hello My Name is..." name tags so new members or folks just checking things out will feel welcome.
If you haven't received your Runner of the Year award for 2021/2022, it will be available for pickup on Sunday. The fun starts at 1pm. We will be downstairs and upstairs at Intracoastal. Look for the SCR table to check in and get your name tag, pint glass and drink ticket. Questions? Email info@spacecoastrunners.org.

Throughout her college running career, she began to feel how the ebbs and flows of nutrition impact performance, sparking her interest in dietetics, and guiding her to pursue a career in dietetics. She entered Drexel University in 2014 where she studied Human Nutrition, and then completed her dietetic internship through Oregon State University before passing her RD exam in 2018.
Danielle is super passionate about empowering athletes and active individuals to nourish and fuel their bodies for optimal athletic performance, while also helping them live a healthy, but full life.

SCR Renames Annual Scholarship in Memory of Christian Lake
Even though he was young in years, Christian Lake made a lasting impression on those who knew him, not only as a talented runner but as a guy with a very giving heart, a caring will to help others and a big, bright smile. That's why the SCR Board of Directors unanimously decided to rename SCR Student Scholarship in Christian's honor and memory.
"I am very honored to announce that Space Coast Runners will be naming our Student Scholarship Program in memory of Christian Lake.", said Debbie Wells, Club President. "With the support of the Lake family (Les, Kelley, Nick & Kailyn), this program will now be known as the SCR Christian Lake Memorial Scholarship."
Christian was a SCR member with his family and an outstanding runner in high school and collegiately at Florida Institute of Technology. Sadly, he was lost 4 years ago in a tragic car accident at the age of 21. He left his family and friends with so many warm memories that inspire them every day.
Much like Christian did in his life, the scholarship is making a difference. Designed to assist two local Brevard high school seniors, the annual $2,000 awards recognizes those lives that have benefited in some way from running for their school's cross country or track program or have family members that run, which in turn has impacted their lives.
"We were very touched and honored by this tribute.", said his mother, Kelley Lake. "It came as quite a surprise and we know how this would have made Christian so proud."
The 2021-2022 scholarship application process opens to all Brevard graduating seniors in January 2022.
The first neighborhood run will take place in Viera/Suntree. Join neighborhood lead, Rachel Weeks for a tour around Viera (3 or 5.49 miles) on one or all of the following dates:

Celebration Night will now be held at the Eau Gallie Square Park from 5pm - 8pm. This is the little park that was used a few years back when Downtown Melbourne 5K had to move locations. The address is: 1453 Highland Ave, Melbourne FL 32901. Do not park at Eau Gallie Civice Center as they have a prom. Please try to park on the side streets, the library, etc. Sorry for the change but it was out of our hands. See you tonight at Eau Gallie Square Park.

Canceled: Space Coast Classic... Run Virtually
On behalf of Space Coast Runners and Power of Pizza Charities, we are heartbroken to share that we have canceled this April's 34th Space Coast Classic 15K & 2 Mile. This decision was made due to the ongoing efforts to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. The physical race will not take place but you can still participate virtually. We've even designed a special 2020 Covid-19 Virus Edition race shirt for our virtual runners and walkers.
If you have already registered for the Space Coast Classic 15K, 3x5K Relay or 2 MIle, we are giving our participants several options from which to choose since our race will not take place.
Registered participants can take advantage of any of these 3 options until midnight, April 1, 2020. Registered participants will receive an email with detailed instructions. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email spacecoastclassic@gmail.com. Instructions can also be found at: https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/Melbourne/SpaceCoastClassic
Over the last 34 years we've been very fortunate to be able to donate to a wide variety of charities. The worst part of having to cancel is that our runners and charities are going to be the ones who suffer. Space Coast Runners will be making a decision on how this will effect the SCR Runner of the Year Series at their meeting next week (which will now also be held virtually). Stay tuned for more information as these decisions are made. I look forward to seeing everyone at the 2021 start line or seeing your Virtual Run posts on social media. If you do run virtually, make sure to include #spacecoastclassic.
Downtown Melbourne 5K has been cancelled. It was Runner of the Year Series race #10. What does that mean for the 2019-2020 ROY Series?
The 2019-2020 Runner of the Year Series will drop the Downtown Melbourne 5K from its ROY points calculations. The race is now considered a mandatory drop. The ROY Series is currently in "wait and see" mode as the final two races, Space Coast Classic 15K & 2 Mile on April 19 and Eat My Crust 5K on May 3, fall outside the recommended 30 day COVID-19 cancel/postpone window for mass gatherings. They remain on the calendar as scheduled. SCR will actively be monitoring their status and make decisions in the best interest of the membership. Our biggest concern is for the safety, welfare and health of our ROY Series participants.
For now, the ROY Series will consist of 12 races with one drop race. Ran All Races has been updated on the club's website. ROY points are being processed now and will be up by Wednesday, March 18.

CONGRATS SCR PEOPLE'S CHOICE WINNERS!
There were 5 People's Choice awards presented at the Club's Celebration Night. We had one new category which was Best Local Race Shirt. SCR members did all the nominating and all the voting. Here's what happened when the envelopes were opened...
Best Local Race Shirt:
We're quite lucky to have such a variety of great races right here in Brevard County. And with great races come fantastic race shirts! The five races nominated in the new Best Local Race Shirt category showcase spectacular inspiration and design that makes every participant want to wear the shirt, year after year. The nominees for Best Local Race Shirt were:
Winner: Turtle Krawl 5K
Best Legs Female & Male:
These awards celebrate the legs you see out there training on the roads and running hard in the races. This year's nominees range from the strongest to the longest, some sporting toned calves, others killer quads. The nominees for Best Female Legs were:
Winner: Holly Davis
For the guys, last year's winner, Ed Donner had the chance to repeat in this category. Everyone held their breath as the nominees for Best Male Legs were announced:
Winner: Ed Donner (2x champion)
Most Improved Runner:
Our first nominee, Jen Absher is no stranger to this category, she was nominated for Most Improved last year. For the second straight year she has ran consistently and improved her times over a range of distances which included a sub-3 hour PR at this year’s Boston Marathon.
It's always interesting to see new faces finish near the front and if you were watching you were bound to see Aaron Fournier's this season. Having joined SCR in the fall of 2017, Aaron ran in a handful of ROY races last series. In 2018/2019 he stepped it up. Aaron not only ran all 9 ROY Series races, but he delivered fast times with marked improvement. Plus, he delivered a clutch performance at the series finale, the Eat My Crust 5K, where he finished as the top SCR runner in the points race.
Next up we have young runner, Gabriel Good. At the beginning of the Brevard 2018-19 running season, Gabriel ran the Firecracker 5K in 22:11.9. Months later he finished the Downtown Melbourne 5K with an awesome time of 17:38.8 / 5:41 pace. Additionally, he improved his half marathon time and ran very consistent throughout the season.
Bambi Sweeney was nominated for the improvement in her times over the past season and for winning the SCR-ROY female title. She ran notable PRs in the Space Coast half marathon, Eye of the Dragon 10K, and Excalibur 10 miler while having great improvements in the other distances!
And finally, we have Katie Wilson. Katie trained for her first marathon and her race times improved in all distances. She started running more frequently and adding in workouts which led to PR’s in the 5K, 10K and Half Marathon. Last August she ran 33:05 at the Running on Island Time 5K and this spring finished the No Place Like Home 5K in 30:22.
Great performances like this and all the others from our 5 nominees made this category the most hotly contested for a People’s Choice award this year.
Winner: Bambi Sweeney
Most Inspirational Athlete:
We have five fantastic nominees this year!
Our first nominee, Dave Farrell, has been an asset to Space Coast Runner for almost 3 decades. Always inspiring other runners to do their best and cheer them on. He has "been there, done that" and keeps on going.
Next we have Mike McNees. Mike was leading the Senior Grand Masters division for the first few races of the 2018/2019 season. but in November, Mike had a serious heart procedure 5 days before the Space Coast Half Marathon. He had a stint put in and was told by his cardiologist to not run for six months. Mike still showed up to the SCR ROY races and even walked the remaining races on the schedule, all while encouraging others along the way.
Lisa Petrillo was our next nominee. She's had quite a year. She came back from injury to run an ultra 50K in January where she won overall female. Last month she ran a 25K and won it too. Despite divorce and the loss of her beloved dog, Cooper, Lisa has persevered over life's ups and downs and her running has thrived!
You might remember the next nominee from last year. Tom Stokes, he keeps on inspiring. Last year, we learned Tom had had a liver transplant in July 2017. His recovery was not easy, but he made it look easy. It's been a true pleasure to watch Tom's comeback and how he has become a true organ transplant ambassador. Plus, he's a really great guy who supports others in the running and triathlon communities with his kudos on Strava to the kind words he offers at races and other social events. Tom is definitely making great use of the organ transplant that he waited over 2 years to receive! He'll be representing the US at the World Transplant Games in the United Kingdom this August in his new age group.
And finally we have Katie Wilson. Katie conquered the marathon in a time just over 5 hours. She is a stay at home mom who also home schools her children, yet she finds time to train. She worked on her cadence, and she PR'd every single distance this season with significant margins. She puts her heart and soul into all she does.
Winner: Tom Stokes

Volunteer! SCR Gives Back.
Each week on Thursday, The Children's Hunger Project packs weekend meals for elementary school children that teachers know are coming to school hungry on Monday mornings. These children carry the much needed food home for the weekend in their backpack. It's a way to fight childhood hunger and malnutrition during the school year right here in Brevard County.
Space Coast Runners will be providing the volunteers to pack meals on Thursday, November 1st from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. We need 20 to 25 members to volunteer to make this night a success. If you participated back in April, you know this is a fun, worthwhile event to be a part of.
Will you join us in this special SCR Gives Back outreach?
We'll be packing at The Children's Hunger Project facility which is located in Cocoa on 520 (1855 W King St, Cocoa, FL 32926). Volunteers should be 12 years of age or older. To register online,
